Health

Here is a few of the health problems found in the breed.

Bloat

Bloat is a common name for Torsion and Gastric Dilation-volvulus or GDV, both of which are critical and need immediate medical treatment. The large and giant breeds are most common to bloat.  The deep narrow chest dogs are at the highest risks. Interesting when I was researching bloat  I found this. "From the research performed to date, we can list several factors that, added together, can characterize the typical dog that develops bloat: a deep and narrow chest; leanness; a relative that has had a bloat episode; eating quickly; a dry-food diet; a single, large daily meal; stress; and a fearful, nervous, or aggressive temperament."  i have several links to sites that explain bloat in more technical terms along with the treatments.  Through talking with other Fila owners though I have found that most of the dogs that have bloated they were NOT stressed or had fearful or nervous temperments. In fact most of the dogs were very calm dogs. My personal dog that bloated was very calm and laid back.

Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia and Patella problems

Hip dysplasia is a disease that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause deterioration of the joints.  Excessive growth, exercise, nutrition, and hereditary factors affect the occurrence of hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia literally means an abnormality in the development of the hip joint. It is characterized by a shallow acetabulum (the "cup" of the hip joint) and changes in the shape of the femoral head (the "ball" of the hip joint).

Elbow dysplasia is a disease that the  elbow joint is malformed on X-rays. Due to  the growth rates of the three bones that make up the elbow joint, particularly the humerus and ulna.

Patella problems isnt common among fila. But there has been problems that have come up and dogs that have problems require surg.

Vaccines

I personally do minimal vaccines. You need to research vaccines and make your own choice as to what you are comfortable with.
